But due to local protests and environmental issues, in 2016 Rio Tinto gave up Project Rod. Even at that time, many questions were raised on the matter that after investing hundreds of crores, why did the company suddenly 'get away from this project.


Experts are of the opinion that "local bottlenecks were becoming more and more common" for a foreign company. However, after a new auction in 2019, Aditya Birla Group's Essel Mining Company got a new license to mine diamonds. This time diamond mining was to be done on 382 crore hectares.
