Retired Ground Colonel Ganesan spoke about the security aspects of the helicopter crash in which India's Commander-in-Chief Bipin Rawat was travelling, killing 13 people, including the Commander-in-Chief. 

Q. The crash of a helicopter carrying the Commander-in-Chief of the indian army has come as a shock. How about a security check for helicopters that usually carry the most important people like this?

P . The day of the accident was a black day in indian history. Although there are many army commanders, the death of the leader of the three forces in a military plane crash is awful.

The Mi 17 V5 he flew was a Russian-made helicopter. There are about 150 such helicopters in India. The President and the prime minister use these helicopters. 

However, since these Cheetah and Sadak helicopters often crash, we started using these Mi 17 helicopters after 2008. This helicopter is a very sturdy, safe helicopter.

Other than that, if a prominent person is going to travel by helicopter, the helicopter will be thoroughly inspected beforehand. Whichever pilot is going to operate the helicopter, he or she will operate the helicopter on the same route a couple of days in advance and markdown exactly how long it will take to land the helicopter where it is supposed to land.

Once the helicopter returns and lands, it will be parked by security guards so that no one else can approach it. 

Q. How could the accident have happened despite so many safety arrangements?

P. All safety tests have a definition. The vehicle, which went into service yesterday, caught fire while on the road today. Therefore human efforts cannot be blamed for mechanical malfunctions. 

Q. Are these Mi 17 helicopters capable of flying in all weathers?

P . Yes. This is called an 'all-weather helicopter'. More than half the countries in the world use their country’s presidents and prime ministers to fly. 

The cockpit is designed to protect the pilot in the event of a helicopter crash.

The gas filling tank is twice insulated with polyurethane foam. This is so that the fuel tank does not explode if it falls from above.

 Even in this crash, deaths would have been avoided if the helicopter had crashed in the open. Such a big accident happened because of a fall in a forested mountain area.

Q. The black box has been recovered from this helicopter. What details might it contain?

If a problem arises, the time to do something will be very limited. This is because the planes are spread over an altitude of 33,000 feet.

In the event of a problem, the pilot can tell the control room what the problem is. helicopters, however, fly at an altitude of 5,000 to 6,000 feet. 

Q. Various speculations are being made regarding this accident .. is that correct?

P. There is no way to walk according to these speculations. As mentioned earlier the helicopter will be brought under heavy security after the tests are completed. There is no chance of conspiracy work. There is no chance of this happening in South India.
