Konaseema district renamed after Ambedkar!
On april 4, 2022, Konaseema was created from the east godavari district, with Amalapuram as the district headquarters, as part of the reorganisation of Andhra Pradesh's 13 districts into 26. While another district was formed out of the east godavari, with kakinada town as the district headquarters, the remaining east godavari district was given rajahmundry as the district headquarters.
Several requests had been made to rename Konaseema after former lok sabha Speaker GMC Balayogi or indian Constitution architect B R Ambedkar. mudragada padmanabham, a prominent Kapu leader and former minister, wrote the chief minister two letters to this effect. Finally, instead of Balayogi, who had represented the TDP, jagan chose to rename Konaseema after Ambedkar. The district is dominated by Dalits, with the SC-only Amalapuram constituency. So, presumably, renaming the district after Ambedkar will benefit the YSRC!
