murder at Yellowstone City chronicles the citizens of the namesake town, which was once rich but is now dilapidated. people on the periphery of society or fleeing their pasts now find refuge in Yellowstone City. There is the bible-believing minister Thaddeus Murphy (Thomas Jane), a skilled marksman and mystery-solver. The story revolves around him and his intelligent wife Alice (Anna Camp), who they question about the circumstances surrounding the titular murder. Prospector Robert Dunnigan (Zach McGowan) is the victim. After finding gold, he said that he would help his fellow struggling town residents, giving them hope that was quickly dashed by his murder.
Small initiatives like this depict a town that is unlike most others and that would accept a Black man walking in without much ado. Although Belgau has made some strides, this is still a Western, and when murder is a possibility, he chooses to be far less sophisticated. murder in Yellowstone City had the advantage of being in a wide-open, lush, and cinematography-ready landscape thanks to director Richard Gray's choice to shoot there. To fully convey the magnificence of this region, very little has to be done. The movie is also well-made, and a good variety of cinematography techniques portray the small town's surroundings as well as the elaborate costumes and stunning production design.
Aside from the weak portrayal of non-white characters, the film's length is its main drawback. When getting to the point, it is plodding in places and meandering in others. Only a short while into the film does the culprit become obvious, and what follows is a struggle between conscience and pride as the sheriff concentrates his efforts on killing an innocent Black man. While resolving this murder case, the pastor and his wife do more than just preach. The story has the potential to be expanded a little, especially in terms of the town and its residents. It would have been preferable to develop some of the characters in a serial format, especially those that regrettably receive props before being abruptly demolished.
There are some good parts of murder at Yellowstone City. The tale does fall into the same antiquated traps that could have been avoided, despite some efforts being made to ameliorate dated stereotypes. This is especially true when you consider how many personalities the director has at his disposal. Despite having a preacher-turned-sleuth at the centre of an engaging adventure, the plot stumbles under strain and recycles worn-out ideas. Even though the shot was so clear, the murder at Yellowstone City was tragically a miss overall.
