Meme Boys, SonyLIV's first original
tamil series, has funny characters with oddities, too many twists, and a lot of boomer jokes. It may not be the best
college comedy-drama you'll binge
watch this weekend, but it's a lighthearted programme you wouldn't mind watching for a quick laugh during your lunch break. When four
college buddies create a meme page to enter a competition, things quickly spiral out of control when they start using their anonymous online persona to expose the flaws in their school's administration. They earn likes and fame but come under the
college dean's scrutiny. The drama unfolds as they attempt to avoid his eyes.
SonyLiv will begin airing the eight-episode show on July 22 that was created by Rainshine Entertainment and directed by Arun Koushik and A. Gokul Krishna. The season's first half is plenty of humour, while the second half takes a more sombre tone. By the end of the show, what began as a frivolous attempt by four
college students to make a fast money has transformed into a whole revolution, sparking a "meme robbery," national
tv debates, and trips to the
police station.
Mohan (Aadhitya Bhaskar), Julie (Namritha), "Power"/Srikumar (Jayanth), and
karthik (Siddharth Babu) are four
college students at
apoorva University who are eager to take part in an annual, collegiate-level "Memefest" in which they must create memes in order to compete for a sizable cash
prize of Rs 10 lakh. The four are skilled at handling technology, notably Power, who is highly regarded at the
college for being a tech genius and is even referred to on one occasion as the "Nephew of Charles Babbage" Three additional notable characters also advance the story in the movie. The characters are at odds with the
college dean Narayan (Guru Somasundaram), as well as his assistant Kathir (Badava Gopi).
Meme Boys portrays
social media as a platform for
people to express themselves and build support for change. Thoughts become things, as Mohan keeps repeating throughout the show, encouraging his team to
press on despite any challenges the Dean may present. In a recent interview, Guru Somasundaram even stated, "Memes today have a specific position in this planet. All of them create memes. These memes are being enjoyed and shared. What if I didn't like a meme that someone produced about me? But that spread widely. How will I respond?
All things considered, this
tamil comedy-drama has the potential to be a hit and be revived for a second season. Although it is energetic, it isn't as healthy as, instance, Kota Factory (2019). Even while none of the characters will win your heart, there are aspects that will make you want to see the next instalment. Meme Boys has a narrative structure that paces slowly at first to draw you in and then picks up right in the middle, which is what makes it so interesting. Even if you weren't too impressed previously, the climb has you curious about what might happen next, so you're just going to stick with it.
