YSRC Wants to Join Freebies Case in Supreme Court
The supreme court heard the freebies controversy when ashwini Upadhyay of the bjp filed a case challenging the offer of freebies during election season. As of now, the aam aadmi party of arvind kejriwal and the DMK, which is in power in tamil Nadu, have both made requests to participate in the proceedings. Both parties passionately disagree with the bjp leader's position in their petitions. The petition argued that although though spending on agriculture, health care, education, and poverty eradication is recognised as revenue spending under the present accounting system, it shouldn't be considered "wasteful."
Spending on these social areas has a huge potential to build long-term human capital and assets with enormous socioeconomic relevance. The argument also mentioned economists who were awarded the 2019 Sveriges Riskbank prize in Economic sciences in honour of alfred Nobel, including Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo, and Michael Kremer. These economists have stated in a number of research publications that government programmes that envision direct transfer of benefits have had successful results in terms of education and health, according to the petition.
