The chief minister Y.S. jagan Mohan Reddy's plan to shut down the belt shops and raise the price of alcohol to discourage use has produced the desired outcome. The consumption of alcohol decreased from 384.31 lakh instances in 2018–19 to 278.5 lakh cases in 2021–22, according to the officials. They told the cm that the number of cases sold of beer also decreased, from 277.20 lakh to 82.6 lakh.

However, due to a significant increase in price, the revenue from the sale of alcohol jumped from 20,128 crore to Rs 25,023 crore. The authorities also disclosed to jagan that 16,27 people were detained for their involvement in the unlawful activity while a total of 20,127 instances were reported in relation to the manufacture and trade of illicit alcohol.

Senior opposition leaders questioned whether jagan would keep his promise to impose prohibition in andhra pradesh given the enormous profits from alcohol and the ycp government's determination to borrow significantly in the name of the ap Beverages Corporation. The tdp leaders said that the CM's hastily made vow of prohibition during his padayatra and campaigning was exactly that—a false promise. They emphasised that jagan depends on the money made from the selling of alcohol and even diverts the money obtained from that source.
