Stone Quarry Accident: 15 to 20 laborers buried...


A stone quarry suddenly collapsed on monday in Hnahthial district of Mizoram. At least 15 to 20 laborers have been buried under the debris in the accident in this mine of a private company. All these laborers from bihar have been told. Rescue work was started immediately after the accident at 3 pm, but not a single laborer could be pulled out of the debris till late night. Due to this, the possibility of death of all the laborers is being expressed. However, the administration or the company has not yet officially confirmed the death of anyone.

Had returned after having food, then the accident happened

There is a stone quarry of ABCI Infrastructure private limited in Maudarh village of Hnahthial district. In this mine on monday, the workers went to have lunch after working in the afternoon. According to rural eyewitnesses who were nearby at the time of the accident, the mountain suddenly collapsed after starting work after the laborers returned after having their food at around 3 pm.

The number of buried laborers is not confirmed yet

Hnahthial Superintendent of police Vineet Kumar told PTI that one laborer managed to avoid coming under the debris, but 12 laborers were buried there. However, according to the reports of IANS, 15 to 20 laborers are buried under the debris. The department has also quoted the deputy commissioner of Hnahthial as saying that a whole part of the mountain has collapsed and turned into rubble, under which five excavators and other drilling machines have been buried along with the laborers.

Stones were being broken for the highway

PTI quoted officials as saying that the stone quarry in which the accident took place was running for the last 2.5 years. The company running this mine is currently building a highway between Hnahthial to Dawn village. Stones were being collected from the boulders of the mine for this highway. According to eyewitnesses, the area of the mine is of a mountain of clay-stone mixture, by breaking which the laborers work to separate the stones from the debris of the soil.
