Stray dogs can be seen roaming everywhere in Coimbatore. In particular, the number of stray dogs in the city, which was 70 thousand in 2006, has increased to 1.11 lakh according to the current year's count. Stray dogs that are multiplying without control and cattle like goats, cows, horses roaming on the roads are causing great fear to the public and motorists.
A sterilization center was started in 2006 at Seeranayakanpalayam to control the breeding of stray dogs. Stray dogs were sterilized and released back to the place of capture. Stray dog sterilization centers were started in Ondiputhur a few years ago and recently in Ukkadam. An average of 20 to 25 dogs are sterilized here every day.
According to social activists Rajkumar, Saravanan and others, "On average, more than 500 people in coimbatore are treated in government hospitals and private hospitals due to dog bites every year. Stray dog sterilization surgery has not been done properly for the last 4 years. This has increased their reproduction. Every street has at least 4 stray dogs. They chase and bite pedestrians and vehicles at night. As a result, people are afraid to walk. Besides, these stray dogs suddenly jump across the roads and cause accidents to motorists.
Similarly, accidents also occur due to unrestrained cattle roaming on the roads. Important roads including Customs Roundabout, Valangulam-Ukkadam Bypass Road, Vincent Road, Ukkadam Road, Perur Bypass Road, Ukkadam-Athupalam Road, Oppanakkara Road, Vaisial Road, Sungam Road, Rajaveedi, RS Puram, Gandhipark, Redfields Road, Dudiyalur Road Livestock such as goats, cows, and horses roam freely on the roads. When the vehicles come, the drivers stumble and fall down due to the sudden crossing of the vehicles. Action should be taken by confiscating cattle and imposing fines on their owners,” he said.
