Cultivation in 3,000 acres is a question mark as canals are not cleared in Kumari!
In Kumari district, two-way rice cultivation is done every year, namely Kannipoo and Kumpapoo. Cultivation of cannibals is currently underway. While the area of paddy fields has shrunk to 6,000 hectares, water was released from Pachiparai and Perunjani dams for cannabi cultivation from the 1st of last year without digging irrigation canals.
Since there was already some water in the ponds, the planting work in the fields in Suchindram, Irachakulam, Therur, Tirupathisaram, Vembanur etc., which depend on pond irrigation, is in full swing. Farmers are showing interest in planting nurseries and applying chemical fertilizers in most of the fields.
So far only 3,000 hectares of paddy fields under pond irrigation have been cultivated. At the same time, the dams were opened without proper planning and the canals were not dug, so the water did not reach the market areas.
Similarly, there is no water in the major irrigated areas, including the Dumkakarai Canal and the Anandanar Canal. Due to this, they have accepted the demands of the farmers and now they are digging the canals across the district.
This cannibal season has been affected as planting in river irrigated areas after dredging is completed and water is released will be delayed and crops will be affected. Due to this the farmers of Kumari district are very worried. More than 3,000 hectares of river irrigated fields are lying fallow.
