Central Govt asks Ideas from People to reduce Tomato Prices
Tomato prices have been on the rise in various parts of the country for the past few weeks. Decreased production of tomatoes, damage to crops due to heavy rains are said to be the reasons for the increase in tomato prices. Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh said that the public can give their suggestions regarding how to deal with such reasons, how to ensure that the price of tomatoes does not rise, how to ensure that the tomato farmers get the right price, etc.
Rohit Kumar Singh said that students, research scholars, teachers, industrialists, start-ups, professionals etc. can participate in this initiative of the central government called 'Tomato Grand Challenge Hackathon', and said that the hackathon has been created by the Consumer Affairs Department in collaboration with the Innovation Division of the Ministry of Education. He said that similar action was taken earlier when the price of onion was increased and the ministry received 13 ideas regarding controlling the price of onion.
"Tomato production takes place at different times in different regions of the country. This cyclical difference in planting and harvesting seasons is the main reason for tomato prices in each season. Apart from seasonality, temporary disruptions in the supply chain, crop damage due to adverse weather conditions, etc. also contribute to sudden price hikes," said the Central Consumer Affairs.
