If an electric fence is erected in tomato garden, action will be taken
Out of the 200 elephants that came from karnataka state last year, 100 elephants are permanently camped in the forest area of Dhenkanikottai, Thali and Javalgiri. In this, more than 10 elephants came out of the Thimma Chandram reserve forest near Dhenkanikottai two days ago and have been damaging crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and bananas in the villages near the forest.
Subsequently, the forest department has camped in the area and is monitoring the movement of elephants. Meanwhile, due to the rise in the price of tomatoes, some farmers have been accused of erecting electric fences without permission to prevent wild animals from entering their tomato gardens.
In this regard, Dhenkanikottai forest staff said: Elephants have entered the agricultural lands near Dhenkanikottai two days ago and damaged the crops. We are constantly monitoring it to ensure that it does not come back into cropland. It has been reported that some farmers have erected electric fences in their tomato gardens without permission.
Due to this, not only elephants but also humans are at risk of death. Strict action will be taken against those who set up electric fences in gardens. If elephants enter agricultural lands, the forest department should be informed. Thus they said.
