Israel - Hamas War : WHO says Gaza's Main Hospital Not Functioning
The Israeli military claims it has agreed to assist with the evacuation of newborns from the hospital to a "safer" facility, but it disputes that Al-Shifa has lost control. Israel's president, Isaac Herzog, claims Hamas has a stronghold beneath the structure, which Hamas rejects. The Israeli military claims that it is not attacking the hospital during the battle. Following the Hamas onslaught on 7 October, in which 1,200 people were murdered and more than 200 were held captive, israel began bombing Gaza. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, over 11,000 people have been murdered in Gaza since then, with over 4,500 of them being children.
The World health Organisation has issued a "dire and perilous" warning about the situation at Gaza's major medical institution, Al-Shifa Hospital, which is facing a near-complete power outage as well as food and water shortages. According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, "constant gunfire and bombings" in the neighborhood around the hospital have "exacerbated the already critical circumstances," and Al-Shifa "is no longer functioning as a hospital."
The Israeli military has stated that it is "ready to help" with the evacuation of the dozens of fragile newborn babies being cared for at the facility to another hospital. Dr Marwan Abu Saada, the chief of surgery at Al-Shifa, informed the india Herald that a third preterm newborn infant died due to a shortage of electricity.
