India favours UN resolution expressing concern over Israel
India supported a draught resolution at the UN General assembly that expressed grave concern about Israel's refusal to withdraw from the Syrian Golan. The Syrian Golan is an area in southwest syria that israel seized on june 5, 1967. On tuesday, the 193-member United Nations General assembly voted on the draught resolution titled "The Syrian Golan" under the agenda item "The Situation in the Middle East." egypt proposed the resolution, which was approved by a recorded vote of 91 in favor, eight against, and 62 abstentions.
Aside from India, the resolution was supported by Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Russia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. Australia, Canada, israel, the United Kingdom, and the united states voted against it. According to the resolution, israel has not withdrawn from the Syrian Golan, which has been under occupation since 1967, despite Security Council and General assembly decisions.
The resolution said that israel had violated Security Council Resolution 497 (1981), which stated that "the Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights is null and void and without international legal effect."
The resolution passed on tuesday also proclaimed the Israeli judgment of december 14, 1981, null and invalid, with no legal standing. It urged israel to reverse its decision. The resolution further emphadata-sized Israel's unlawful settlement expansion and other operations in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967.
It demanded that israel withdraw from all of the occupied Syrian Golan to the june 4, 1967 line, in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions, and declared that "the continued occupation of the Syrian Golan and its de facto annexation constitute a stumbling block in the way of achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region."
The resolution expressed grave concern over the halt in the peace process on the Syrian track and expressed hope that peace talks will soon resume from the point they had reached.
