Macron was in india for a two-day state visit and was the primary guest for this year's Republic Day.
In his remarks at President Droupadi Murmu's ceremonial reception for him at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Macron stated that he will "not forget" the chai he had with PM Modi, using the hindi word for tea. "I shall never forget the tea we enjoyed near the castle. The tea was paid for with UPI. This is the ideal blend of what makes it so special: the friendliness and warmth of such a celebration, as well as tradition and creativity. "This is what we want to do together," Macron stated.
In a video shared by the BJP, PM Modi and Macron were seen talking while having tea from a kulhad (earthern cup) outside a store near the Hawa Mahal. After tea, PM Modi was spotted using UPI to pay for the drink.
He showed Macron while completing the UPI payment, and when the store received an immediate payment confirmation, the French President was pleasantly delighted.
PM Modi introduced the UPI system to Macron during a visit to a small tea shop.
The UPI system consolidates several bank accounts into a single mobile application, allowing users to access various banking functions, conduct simple financial transfers, and make payments to businesses. It also allows for peer-to-peer collect requests, which may be scheduled and paid whenever it is convenient.
During his July visit to france last year, PM Modi stated that indian travellers will soon be able to pay in france using UPI.
"India and france decided to utilise UPI in France. with the coming days, it will begin at the Eiffel Tower, allowing indian tourists to pay with rupees," the prime minister stated.
