According to allegations in the Maldives' media, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem was viciously attacked by unidentified miscreants. Shameem was appointed by the Maldivian Democratic party (MDP), which was in administration until november of last year and is now the opposition party.

The attack on Shameem occurred as other Maldivian legislators were targeted by road gangs in recent days.

Meanwhile, the MDP said that it had collected enough signatures to file a no-confidence resolution against President Mohamed Muizzu and his cabinet. The impeachment resolution against the pro-China President is expected to be brought to parliament shortly.

This outcome happened after MPs clashed in the Maldivian parliament, disrupting a special session called to seek legislative approval for Muizzu's cabinet ministers. MPs from the ruling alliance, the People's National congress (PNC) and the Progressive party of maldives (PPM), fought with the MDP.

Muizzu, 45, upset India-friendly incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in a presidential runoff in september last year.

Soon after assuming the oath of office as President of the maldives on november 17, Muizzu publicly requested that india withdraw 88 military soldiers from his nation by march 15, citing a "strong mandate" from the Maldivian people to do so.

According to the most recent government numbers, 88 indian military personnel are stationed in the maldives to assist operate a Dornier aircraft and two helicopters given by India.

In a veiled swipe at india, Muizzu stated, without mentioning any country, "We may be small, but that does not give you the right to bully us." He made the remarks after visiting China, his first international trip since becoming President.
