The demand for a caste census in india has gained momentum, with the telangana Assembly passing a resolution on february 16, 2024, to conduct a comprehensive door-to-door caste survey within the state. The proposal, aimed at gathering detailed caste-based data, was presented by Backward Class Welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar, with the objective of formulating and implementing targeted schemes for the welfare and upliftment of backward classes, Scheduled Castes (SC), scheduled tribes (ST), and other marginalized sections of society.

The decision was a result of deliberations in the state assembly, following a proposal that had been agreed upon in the recent state cabinet meeting. The move data-aligns with the growing demand for a nationwide caste census, a stance prominently advocated by congress leader rahul Gandhi. gandhi has been critical of the Modi government at the center, emphasizing the need for a caste-based census and promising its inclusion in the agenda if the 'India' coalition government assumes power.

The development in telangana is significant, especially in the context of the impending lok sabha elections anticipated to be held in April-May. rahul gandhi had earlier made a similar commitment during the campaign for the telangana Assembly elections, promising to conduct a comprehensive caste-based census in the state if the congress Party came to power.

This move by the telangana government underscores the regional response to the broader demand for caste-based data, reflecting the political and social significance of such surveys in shaping welfare policies and affirmative action programs.
