Telangana Hyderabad - Crop cultivation drops by 5.04 lakh acres

Reduced water availability and the State government's delayed payment of investment support seem to have hurt Telangana's agricultural output for the next Yasangi (Rabi) season. When comparing the current Yasangi season to the previous Yasangi, the State's total agricultural cultivation area decreased by about 5.04 lakh acres.

As of february 14, over 60.88 lakh acres were under agricultural cultivation. This is less than the 65.92 lakh acres cultivated at the same period of the previous Yasangi season, but it is more than the season's usual cultivation area of 54.93 lakh acres. The whole area under cultivation after the most recent Yasangi season was 72.63 lakh acres.

As of february 14, the area under cultivation for paddy during the current crop season was around 46.28 lakh acres, compared to the 50.71 lakh acres under cultivation during the previous Yasangi season. By the end of the previous Yasangi season, 56.44 lakh acres had been planted with paddy. Two main causes of the decline in the total cultivated area are the reduced water availability and the postponed payment of investment support under the Rythu Bandhu plan.

In all of the main reservoirs, the amount of water that is accessible is drastically decreasing. telangana has about 319.22 TMC of water available in all of its major reservoirs, compared to a total storage capacity of 517.81 TMC, according to the most recent data. Additionally, groundwater levels decreased dramatically from 6.22 mbgl in january of last year to 7.72 mbgl in january of this year, a decrease of almost 1.5 mbgl (meters below ground level).

Farmers are believed to have held off on starting large-scale agriculture because of the uncertainty surrounding the timely availability of water in several locations. For example, compared to the previous Yasangi season, the cultivated area in the former nalgonda district, where farmers are mostly dependent on the nagarjuna sagar project, dropped by more than 1.79 lakh acres. However, there hasn't been much of an influence on agricultural activities underneath them because the bulk of the tanks were filled during the monsoon season.
