NASA warns that New York City will sink into the sea..!?
NASA warns that major US cities will be submerged due to sea level rise. New York and Baltimore are reported to have sunk into the ocean. As natural disasters continue to wreak havoc around the world, NASA's announcement that major US cities will sink into the sea has added to the consternation. virginia Tech's Earth Observation and Discovery Laboratory is funded by NASA. It studies global maritime hazards. The results of the research conducted by this group have now been published and have caused a great stir. According to a report by this group of scientists, the geological problem is happening so fast that it threatens the infrastructure, farmlands, and wetlands that millions of people on the coast rely on.
The team of scientists analyzed satellite data and GPS sensors to learn about the movement of beaches. It found that infrastructure sank significantly between 2007 and 2020 in major cities such as Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Virginia. The land has sunk by an average of 1 to 2 millimeters every year. The researchers also found that some counties in Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, and georgia were sinking at two or three times the rate. According to scientists, the land in the wetlands sinks more than 3 millimeters every year. Forests are also reported to be displaced by saltwater intrusion and drained land. However, confirming that wildlife is not the only one affected, scientists have reported that around 8,97,000 structures, including highways and airports, are on land at risk of being inundated by seawater.
The findings, published in PNAS Nexus, follow another study by a virginia Tech lab. Mid-Atlantic sinks further: nasa images Maps created by nasa using data collected by satellites from the United States, Japan, and Europe. The images show further sinking of the Mid-Atlantic region by the impact of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which began retreating 12,000 years ago and submerged the region.
