Despite a tuesday decision from the calcutta High court, the West bengal administration declined to provide the cbi custody of Sheikh Shahjahan, a leader of the suspended Trinamool Congress. Shahjahan was taken into custody by a group of cbi detectives who arrived at Bhabani Bhawan, the West bengal police Headquarters. They did not, however, return with the Trinamool leader in suspension.
A division bench of the calcutta High court had earlier in the day directed the West bengal government to turn Sheikh Shahjahan over to the cbi in relation to the january 5 attack on Enforcement Directorate officials in Sandeshkhali.
Since Shahjahan had been evading authorities for more than 50 days prior to his arrest on february 29, the court emphasised that the state police had "underplayed the entire situation".
Subsequently, the West bengal government petitioned the supreme court to overturn the High Court's decision to transfer the state police investigation to the CBI.
On january 5, a crowd attacked the Enforcement Directorate team in Sandeshkhali, resulting in several injuries.
The attack took place when Sheikh Shahjahan's home was raided by ED agents in relation to the purported multi-crore ration distribution scheme.
After fleeing for 55 days, Sheikh Shahjahan was apprehended by the state police on february 29.
Many women in Sandeshkhali have also accused Shahjahan and his goons of rape and land grabbing.
