India's first underwater metro link will be opened by prime minister Narendra Modi on wednesday in Kolkata. This historic project will highlight the country's progress in building infrastructure. The underwater service is a portion of kolkata Metro's East-West route, which would cross the Hooghly river for a distance of 16.6 kilometres and pass through Howrah Maidan-Esplanade.
The metro service would link salt Lake and Howrah, the twin cities of the state capital of West Bengal. There will be three subterranean stations among the six.
In around 45 seconds, it is anticipated to speed across a 520-meter section beneath the Hooghly.
Dignitaries and high ranking officials will be present during the inauguration event.
"Although the inauguration is scheduled for tomorrow, wednesday, the passenger services will start at a later time," Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer kaushik Mitra was reported by the PTI news agency as saying.
The groundbreaking of the historic project occurs less than a year after kolkata Metro created history in april 2023 when a train was driven through the underwater tunnel as part of experimental work, a first for India.
Kaushik Mitra described the underwater metro service as "a gift from our Honourable prime minister Narendra Modi to the people of Kolkata" in an interview with india Today tv earlier this week.
"A long-cherished dream is going to be realised with this inauguration," he stated.
The prime minister will also open the Taratala-Majerhat and Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro sections in kolkata today in addition to the underwater metro tube.
He is expected to speak at a public protest in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, on wednesday afternoon.
Shortly after arriving in kolkata on tuesday evening, Modi visited the ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, where Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, the president of ramakrishna Math and Mission, is receiving medical attention.
In a post on X, the prime minister said, "Upon reaching kolkata, went to the hospital and enquired about the health of the President of ramakrishna Math and ramakrishna Mission, Srimat Swami Smaranananda ji Maharaj. We are all praying for his good health and quick recovery."
Prime minister Modi's latest visit to West bengal came two weeks after his last trip to the state during which he addressed public rallies at Arambagh in Hooghly district and Krishnanagar in Nadia.
