Resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel is "Deeply Concerning".

Chief election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar is the only remaining member of the three-member election commission of india following the resignation of election Commissioner Arun Goel on Saturday. Only a few weeks before the lok sabha elections, the opposition has criticized the unexpected action.

Following the departure of election Commissioner Arun Goel, which the opposition parties referred to as "deeply concerning," they turned their attention towards the federal government. Members of congress and the opposition urged the government to provide a "reasonable explanation."

In a jab at the Center, congress Chief Mallikajun Kharge questioned, "Election Commission or election Omission?"

"Even though the lok sabha elections are scheduled to be declared in a few days, india now only has one election Commissioner. Why? As I have stated previously, tyranny will hijack our democracy if we do not halt the methodical destruction of our autonomous institutions," Kharge declared.

"This will now be among the last Constitutional institutions to fall," he said in reference to the election Commission.

"Why hasn't the new election Commissioner been appointed even after 23 days of the PM's term ending, given that the new procedure for choosing election Commissioners has essentially given the ruling party and the PM all power?" The president of the congress stated, "The Modi government needs to respond to these queries and provide a credible explanation.

Saket Gokhale, a member of the Trinamool congress, called the action "very, very concerning."

"Arun Goel, the election Commissioner, has resigned suddenly. The other EC's position is open. There is presently just one Chief election Commissioner remaining for the election Commission. The Modi administration has enacted a new rule that requires the majority vote of prime minister Modi and one minister of his choosing to designate election Commissioners. Therefore, with today's departure, Modi will now nominate two of the three election Commissioners before to the 2024 lok sabha elections. The head of the Trinamool party expressed great alarm over this.

KC Venugopal, the general secretary of congress, said that the ECI was being pressured by the central government and that there was "no transparency" in the way that a constitutional institution operated.

With the lok sabha elections just around the corner, election Commissioner Arun Goel's resignation raises serious concerns for the wellbeing of the biggest democracy in the world. The way the government presses a constitutional institution like the ECI and how it operates is completely opaque, according to Venugopal's essay.
