Rahul
gandhi, a
congress MP, visited households devastated by flooding in the Cachar region of
assam on
monday before travelling to Manipur, which has seen unrest recently. Congressmen from
assam and Manipur greeted him at the
airport as he landed in Silchar. The
gandhi scion then travelled to Fulertal and engaged with the displaced flood victims residing in makeshift camps.
Rahul
gandhi is making his first trip to the Northeast as the
leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
rahul gandhi claimed that the camp is located along the path he will travel to reach the Jiribam area of Manipur.
rahul gandhi visited
assam at a period of intense flooding brought on by days of nonstop rain, which resulted in landslides and overflowing rivers. The flood affected almost 22.70 lakh
people in 28 districts.
Rahul
gandhi will continue his
journey of Manipur by flying to Imphal from Jiribam, returning to the
airport in Silchar, Assam. More than 200 individuals have lost their lives in ethnic violence between the Kuki and Meitei groups in Manipur since May 3 of last year.
Meanwhile,
rahul Gandhi's travels to Manipur and
assam sparked a verbal spat between the
congress and BJP.
Prime
minister Narendra Modi has been under
fire from
congress leader jairam ramesh over his planned trip to
russia and his decision to skip Manipur since ethnic violence there started.
"Today, the
leader of the opposition in the
lok sabha is leaving for
assam and Manipur, while the non-biological
prime minister is travelling to Moscow. Naturally, proponents of the non-biological PM have asserted that he temporarily put an end to the conflict between
russia and Ukraine. This trip to
moscow is probably going to result in even more absurd allegations," he posted.
"This is
rahul Gandhi's third visit to Manipur ever since the state blew up fourteen months ago. The non-biological PM has not found the time nor even had the inclination to visit Manipur even for a few hours after the grave crisis erupted on May 3rd, 2023. He has not even met the
chief minister of the state - who happens to be from his own
party - and other political leaders of the state, including MLAs and MPs," he said.
BJP IT cell chief
amit Malviya hit back at Ramesh and accused
rahul gandhi of indulging in "sick tragedy tourism". He alleged that the violence in Manipur was the Congress's legacy.
