Telangana to scrap mandatory ‘white ration card’ for welfare schemes

The state government of telangana is planning to implement a new policy regarding the issuance of White Ration Cards. This would remove the need for these cards to be to get benefits from the welfare system.

In the past, families needed to provide their white ration cards to be eligible for housing sites, self-employment programs, and fee reimbursement for their children's further education. The administration is currently thinking about doing away with this clause completely. The new policy won't be put into effect until a cabinet subcommittee makes recommendations, according to officials.

The government is ready to distribute new ration cards that would only be good for obtaining subsidized rice from Public Distribution System (PDS) centers, or fair pricing stores, according to State Civil Supplies minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy. The standards and eligibility requirements for the new ration cards will be developed by the cabinet subcommittee.

In the past, to get benefits from various schemes, holders of a white ration card were required to hold one from the governments of Telangana's BRS and the former United Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, the recently elected state administration led by congress has declared that the agricultural loan waiver and the soon-to-be-issued Rajiv arogyasri program cards can now be obtained without a white ration card.

In telangana, 90 lakh households currently possess white ration cards. Based on the subcommittee's recommendations, eligible households would be identified and given new ration cards under the new policy. Before the new policy is implemented, the cabinet must approve these proposals.
