SC refuses to pause order on Bihar's 65% quota on BC
On Monday, the patna High Court's ruling, which eliminated Bihar's 65% quota for backward classes, was not upheld by the supreme Court. The bihar government has petitioned the supreme court to overturn the high court's ruling to revoke the government's plan to raise the reservation percentage from 50% to 65%. The supreme court said that a thorough hearing on the case will be held in September.
The bihar Assembly's 2023 changes were invalidated on june 20 by a division bench of the patna High Court, which ruled that they went beyond the scope of the constitution and violated the equality provision included in Articles 14, 15, and 16 of the document.

Following that, on July 2, the bihar administration, led by chief minister nitish kumar, filed a case in the supreme court contesting the ruling of the high court.
Notably, in november 2023, the Reservation Amendment Bill was enacted by the bihar Assembly. nitish kumar was not present when the law was passed by the state legislature.
Twenty percent went to Scheduled Castes, two percent went to Scheduled Tribes, forty-three percent went to Other backward classes, and very backward classes received the revised reserve quota.
In contrast to the supreme Court's 50% ceiling, the reserve was increased to 75% when the 10% quota for the Economic Weaker Section was added.
