The punjab government amended the nri quota for MBBS and BDS seats last week and extended it to their relatives as well. The next hearing is set for september 2. Geetan Verma and other prospective doctors filed a petition contesting the order's legitimacy.
The petitioners contended that the decision extending the nri quota to their ward and closest relatives was initially passed by punjab and chandigarh through baba Farid university of health Sciences (BFUHS). The general seat quota was then reduced when they filed a second notice to raise the quota to 15% at the Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences. They have been instructed to proceed with the admission procedure without making any modifications as long as the court hearing is still in progress.

This can be because some individuals still think that foreign education is preferable than indian education. Such openings are a result of NRIs in particular sending their children to school outside of India. For this reason, the government changed the quota to allow for greater eligibility.
