Death Sentence for Rape - Possible?
The rape event sparked new worries about women's safety in India, which have persisted. Additionally, it sparked large-scale nationwide demonstrations calling for the victim's justice. In response, earlier today the aparajita Women and Child (West bengal criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024 was unanimously passed by the West bengal Assembly. There was a voice vote, and the bill passed.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West bengal, referred to the law as historic and a model for others throughout the discussion. Any well-behaved person would support it, she continued. She declared that if the law passes, the police department would create a special aparajita Task Force to guarantee prompt investigation of rape cases. Banerjee requested that the opposition bjp party back the law and encourage the governor to sign it. The measure was backed by the opposition bjp party, which demanded that it be put into effect right away when it was enacted.
