Centre Renames Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram
On Friday, Union home minister amit shah announced that the central government has officially decided to rename port blair to "Sri Vijaya Puram." This decision is part of a broader effort to eliminate remnants of colonial influence from India.
The new name, Sri Vijaya Puram, was chosen for its symbolic significance. “Sri Vijaya Puram” translates to “The City of Glorious Victory,” a name that encapsulates the triumph of India's fight for independence and the country's journey towards self-reliance and sovereignty. This renaming is part of a broader trend of re-evaluating and restoring place names that resonate with India’s historical and cultural narratives, rather than those imposed during colonial rule.
In a statement posted on X, Shah explained that the renaming initiative is data-aligned with prime minister Narendra Modi's vision of eradicating colonial legacies. “Inspired by the vision of PM @narendramodi Ji to liberate the nation from colonial imprints, we have chosen to rename port blair as 'Sri Vijaya Puram,'” Shah said.
Shah emphadata-sized that the old name had colonial associations, whereas the new name, Sri Vijaya Puram, represents the triumph and success of India's struggle for independence. The renaming reflects a move towards reclaiming and celebrating the nation's historical and cultural identity.
