Atishi to Be Sworn In as Delhi's Youngest Chief Minister Today
Aam Aadmi party (AAP) leader Atishi is set to take the oath of office today, officially becoming Delhi's youngest chief minister. The ceremony will also include the swearing-in of her council of ministers at raj Niwas.
According to officials from the lieutenant governor’s office, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Atishi as chief minister effective from the date of her swearing-in and has accepted Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. The President has also approved the appointments of five ministers, with the ceremony scheduled for 4:30 PM at raj Niwas. An AAP leader indicated that the event may be low-key, reflecting the somber mood in the party following Kejriwal’s resignation and delays in the approval process, which limited preparation time.
After kejriwal resigned as chief minister along with his council of ministers on Tuesday, the files regarding both his resignation and Atishi’s appointment were sent to President Murmu for approval.
New Council of Ministers
The AAP has announced a new council of ministers that will include Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Imran Hussain, and newcomer mukesh Ahlawat, a first-time mla from Sultanpur Majra. Rai, Gahlot, Bharadwaj, and Hussain served in Kejriwal's outgoing government.
In the previous administration, Atishi managed 13 portfolios, including finance, revenue, public works, power, and education. Rai oversaw the environment, development, and general administration departments, while Bharadwaj was responsible for health, tourism, and urban development. Gahlot handled transport, home affairs, and women and child development, and Hussain managed food and supplies.
AAP to Demonstrate Majority in assembly Session
The new government under Atishi will aim to demonstrate its majority in the delhi assembly during a session called for september 26-27. This government’s tenure is expected to be short, as assembly elections are scheduled for february next year.
The new administration will need to expedite and approve various pending policies and welfare schemes, including the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and doorstep delivery of services, among others.
