The third Purushartha, Kama, is seen to be crucial to an individual's health. The term "libido" is frequently used to refer to sexual drive or the desire for sexual action. An individual's degree of libido indicates their level of sexual desire; a low level indicates low sexual wants and a high level indicates strong sexual drives.

These variations, which frequently occur during the many phases of life, might be attributed to hormonal shifts as well as social and cultural influences. As was previously noted, the body begins to secrete several hormones throughout puberty, including the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone in females and males.
These hormones make one more receptive to sexual desire and exploration. Many people still have strong desires in their late teens and early twenties, which is when they discover their sexuality and begin to explore partnerships. When a person reaches the age where they start making decisions about a profession, responsibilities, and family that might affect their libido, there is some variance in their thirties and forties.
