3 Lakh Illegal Bangladeshis Taken Out of Assam due to NRC

SIBY JEYYA
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in assam has been a complex and contentious issue. While I couldn't find specific information on 3 lakh illegal Bangladeshis moving to other states after the NRC process, we dug as much as possible.

The NRC was first prepared in 1951 and was updated between 2013 to 2019 to identify genuine indian citizens in Assam. The final updated NRC, published in august 2019, included 31 million names out of the 33 million population, leaving out about 1.9 million applicants. These excluded individuals were mostly bengali Hindus, bengali Muslims, and other Hindus from various parts of India.
There have been concerns about illegal immigration from bangladesh into assam, with estimates varying widely. Some reports suggest that around 91000 Bangladeshi nationals might have crossed over to india every year during 1981-1991. However, the government of bangladesh has indicated that they are prepared to take back any of their citizens residing in india if evidence is provided.
Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently announced that new Aadhaar applicants in assam need to submit their NRC application receipt number to prevent illegal foreigners from obtaining the card. This move aims to stop the influx of illegal immigrants and ensure that only genuine citizens receive the benefits.
