Donald Trump becomes second US President in over a century to secure non-consecutive terms

Reportedly in what is one of the most remarkable comebacks in US presidential history, Republican leader donald trump is set to become the second US President in over a century to secure non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1897. trump has won in more than half of the 50 US states, including three key battlegrounds Georgia, north carolina and Pennsylvania, two of which voted Democratic in the last election. He currently has 266 electoral votes, just shy of the 270 needed to win the presidency as his Democratic rival Kamala harris faltered in swing states and stood with 195 votes.

Perhaps donald trump has already taken Pennsylvania, north carolina and Georgia, and is leading over the remaining four swing states – Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin. Polls for weeks have shown a razor-thin race between harris and trump, who would be the oldest president at the time of inauguration and only the second to serve non-consecutive terms. harris, who was a late entrant to the US presidential race since President Joe Biden withdrew in July after a poor debate performance, was initially leading over trump in opinion polls. Despite a strong support from women in exit polls, harris was unable to turn this into votes as she is trailing behind the former President in key states.

Moreover the first US President to win non-consecutive terms was Grover Cleveland, who won his first presidency in 1885 and held the office till 1889. After losing to Benjamin Harrison, Cleveland was elected again to the white house in 1893, and he served till 1897. As the results flowed in, donald trump addressed his supporters who had gathered in Florida’s Palm beach on election night and declared victory over Harris. He said his party will pay back the “hardworking" people of America for their support. He said, “People regained control of their country."
