In pakistan, supporters of imprisoned former prime minister imran khan marched into the capital on monday and resumed their demonstration on Tuesday, resulting in five security officials being murdered and hundreds of people, including police officers, being injured. The administration sent the army to Islamabad as the demonstrators pledged to continue their march.
Conflicts with police and security forces occurred during the protest march led by Khan's wife Bushra Bibi, which started on sunday and arrived in Islamabad by monday night. The demonstrators began their march on Tuesday, intending to assemble at the D-Chowk, which is near a number of important buildings in the city.
Four paratroopers were ran over by protestors, and one police officer was shot dead, according to local media sources. As pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers moved closer to the capital, the city saw increased tensions, a slew of violent incidents, attacks on police, and vehicle burning, injuring dozens.
PTI leader imran khan rejected what he called a "stolen mandate" and made a "final call" for widespread rallies beginning Sunday. The party called for people to "break the shackles of slavery" by participating in the protests. On sunday, protesters marched toward Islamabad under the leadership of Bushra Bibi and ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
The authorities used barricades, concrete obstacles, and shipping containers to obstruct roadways. Violent fights erupted as protestors pushed forward into the national capital using heavy machines and lifting equipment to dismantle the barriers.
In skirmishes in Islamabad and throughout punjab province, Usman Anwar, the provincial police commander, revealed that one police officer was shot dead, at least 119 others were hurt, and 22 police cars were set on fire. There are still two cops in serious condition. There have also been reports of injuries among Imran Khan's followers.
Security personnel informed Pakistani channel Geo tv that four rangers were killed and five others were injured when some criminals ran their car over them on the srinagar Highway.
The administration reportedly made an effort to persuade the PTI to call off the demonstration or agree to a location outside of the city. Bushra Bibi, however, resisted the plan and insisted on moving on to D-Chowk. With Pakistan's Interior minister Mohsin Naqvi warning the previous governing party of severe "consequences" if they approach the high-security zone, the government is preparing harsh measures.
After a no-confidence motion overthrew his administration in 2022, imran khan has been linked to a number of charges. Since last year, he has been detained at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where his party claims he is dealing with more than 200 cases. He has been found guilty in some cases, released on bond in others, and proceedings are still going on in other cases.
Despite competing as independents after being refused an electoral symbol, Khan's party won the most seats in the federal elections held in February. The pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its coalition allies, notably the pakistan Peoples party (PPP), "stole the mandate" to take over at the federal level, according to the PTI leader.
