India Finally Beats China

G GOWTHAM
An unprecedented number of indian students are choosing to pursue higher education overseas. After 15 years, india has overtaken china as the largest supplier of international students in the US as a result of this rise. More than 3.3 lakh indian students were enrolled at American institutions in 2023–2024—a 23% increase from the previous year, according to the most recent data. However, with 2.77 lakh students, china, which was the largest student source the previous year, suffered a 4% decline.

Since the US has a great need for qualified professionals in this industry, the majority of indians choose STEM field courses. As a result, graduating from an American institution makes it simpler for them to settle here and transfer into such employment. This pattern illustrates the economic impact of US education and reflects India's rising desire for it. Due mostly to tuition and living expenses, overseas students made $50 billion in economic contributions to the US in 2023.

It also reflects how the nations relate to one another. Tensions between the united states and china are increasing, despite the fact that US-Indian ties have become stronger in recent years. Under the next US president Donald Trump, who has pledged to impose stringent immigration regulations and greater tariffs on india, this blossoming relationship with india may be in jeopardy. There are all indications that this number may drop during the next four years.
