OTT Locked For Flop Movies - Star Power Still The USP?

OTT portals continue to buy movies like Jigra, Khel Khel Mein, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, and Yodha despite their box office failures. Because of the celebrity power associated with these films, these platforms—which are typically frugal with their budgets—are eager to take them on. Based just on the names of the stars, deals were struck when the movies were originally revealed.

Some movies could even do better on OTT than in theaters, according to experts. Platforms purchase these movies on long-term agreements, usually lasting five to 10 years, with the expectation that they will eventually break even as long as the movies are accessible on their platforms as lifetime content.

Because of the actors and banners involved, OTT services are still chasing these movies despite their dismal box office performance. Both an upfront fee and performance-based payments, which are contingent on box office results or platform viewing, are now included in the acquisition price. Nonetheless, viewers have expressed a clear preference for compelling content above celebrity endorsements. The box office result of these films reflects this, with Khel Khel Mein earning 40 crore, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha getting 8 crore, and Jigra earning 30 crore.

OTT platforms are now negotiating arrangements based on a revenue-sharing model, where creators are compensated depending on the quantity of views the film receives, after learning from their errors in the past. They now concentrate on individual titles rather than grouping several movies together. Even while big-star films are still preferred, platforms want a minimum guarantee before closing deals. Since stars may still increase viewing even if a movie doesn't do well in theaters, OTT platforms are ultimately still keen to acquire films with star power. However, if the movies don't fare well, changes could be made in subsequent agreements.
