In the Chengalpattu district, close to Chennai, a terrible traffic accident in Thiruporur claimed the lives of five ladies. They were seated on the side of the road when a fast automobile lost control and crashed into them. After allowing their livestock to graze the surrounding fields, the deceased, who was identified as M Andhaayi (71), C Logammal (56), G Yasodha (54), S Vijaya (53), and K Gowri (52), were seated by the road.
At the time of the collision, the automobile included four college students. Two of them, including the driver, have been taken into custody by the police; the other two have escaped and are being sought. Before the police arrived at the scene, the two young people were seized and beaten by the local villagers shortly after the accident.
A top police official told TNIE, "Prima facie, the two arrested men, who are college students, did not appear to be drunk but we have sent them for a medical examination to be certain."
According to the police, four people attended a private college close to Thiruporur, including the two people who were detained, Ahmed (20) and Joshua (19), who were operating the vehicle. They were traveling from Thiruporur to Mamallapuram on wednesday afternoon. The five women were reportedly struck by the fast automobile that lost control when they were traveling near the Payanoor-Pandithamedu intersection.
The women were neighbors from the hamlet of Payanoor. Two of them were thrown a few feet away as the automobile crashed into them. The townspeople encircled the car after the collision. The locals apprehended Johsua and Ahmed, while two of them managed to flee.
After racing to the scene, Chengalpattu district police arrested the two males. For a postmortem, the deceased's remains were delivered to Chengalpattu government Hospital.
In the meantime, a group of Payanoor locals protested and prevented the police car from leaving the area, calling for prompt and harsh punishment for those inside. The people also called for financial support for the deceased's relatives. According to a police official, the police dispersed the gathering and assured them that their requests would be granted.
MK Stalin, the chief minister of tamil Nadu, expressed his condolences for the fatalities later that day and gave the relatives of the deceased Rs. 2 lakh apiece.
