High Testosterone Levels Doesn't Mean High Séx Drive - Study Finds
Men's testicles generate the majority of the hormone testosterone, whereas women's ovaries produce lower quantities. It has a significant impact on the development of secondary sexual traits in males, including the growth of body hair and an increase in bone and muscle mass. An international team of researchers led by the university of California, Santa Barbara, believes that daily fluctuations in testosterone levels have no meaningful connection to men's sexual desire, even though its significance in reproductive behavior has been well documented.
"A man experiencing higher-than-usual testosterone concentrations on a given day does not typically exhibit higher-than-usual sexual desire on that same day," the research found.
According to the researchers, their research supported earlier findings that suggested males just need a threshold level of baseline testosterone to have sexual desire.
It's interesting to note that the researchers discovered a favorable correlation between men's testosterone levels and the amount of work they put into courting their partners.
"We propose that the evolved functions of testosterone in human males are more closely associated with courtship efforts than with sexual desire," the research stated.
How was the research carried out?
For a 31-day experiment, 41 guys between the ages of 18 and 26 with different relationship statuses—27 single, 14 committed to a partner—were enlisted. Participants were asked to respond to questions such as "How much sexual desire did you experience?" as part of a daily saliva study to determine testosterone concentrations. "How much effort did you put into attracting a possible romantic and/or sexual partner yesterday?" along with "How much did you have sexual fantasies?"
Testosterone levels were greater on days when the unmarried males engaged with potential partners, indicating that they put in more work to find a spouse.
"Testosterone fluctuations in the normal range may positively predict day-to-day changes in men's mate attraction efforts among single men, especially given social interactions with potential mates."
Notwithstanding the results, the researchers stated that further information was required to deepen their comprehension of the issue.
