Devendra Fadnavis accused Karnataka Congress of repeatedly disrespecting Savarkar’s legacy as a freedom fighter
Previously on august 15, 2022, a clash erupted in Shivamogga over a Savarkar poster at Ameer ahmed Circle. Tensions escalated when another group attempted to display a poster of Tipu sultan at the same spot, leading to a stabbing incident. Authorities intervened by hoisting the national flag, but Savarkar’s image later appeared at Bengaluru’s Majestic Metro station, sharing space with Chandrashekhar azad and Udham Singh.
As per report a Class 8 kannada textbook sparked debate with a passage claiming that Savarkar used to fly on a bulbul bird during his solitary confinement at the Cellular Jail from 1911 to 1924. The textbook’s creator defended it as “beautified prose," but educationists and historians dismissed it as “pure distortion."
In 2020, the Yediyurappa government faced protests from congress and JD(S) over a 400-metre flyover named after Savarkar in Yelahanka, Bengaluru. The Rs 34-crore project, scheduled for inauguration on May 28, Savarkar’s birth anniversary, was postponed by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), citing Covid-19 restrictions.
Moreover during ganesh chaturthi in 2021, bjp members distributed posters of Savarkar, while right-wing groups planned to display his image alongside Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in Ganesh pandals. The Hindu Janajagruthi Samiti allocated Rs 150 per pandal for these posters which added fuel to the fire.
