Opposition parties and many MPs from the ruling party opposed this. parliament immediately met and passed a resolution to lift the state of emergency. The president withdrew the state of emergency declaration within a few hours. Meanwhile, a resolution was tabled in parliament to impeach him. It failed because ruling party MPs did not participate. Opposition parties had announced that they would resubmit the impeachment bill. A parliamentary committee is investigating the declaration of a state of emergency. The president was also banned from leaving the country.
In this situation, a motion to impeach Yoon Suk-yeol was brought up again today. With a total of 300 MPs, the motion needs the support of 200 people to pass. However, 204 people voted in favor of the impeachment motion against the president. 85 people voted against. 8 votes were declared invalid. He was subsequently suspended from office. According to the country's constitution, prime minister Han Tak-soo will act as interim president. Furthermore, according to the country's law, the Constitutional court will investigate the charges against Yoon Suk-yeol. At the end of the motion, a final decision will be made on whether to permanently remove him from office or reinstate him. It will take six months to complete. Yoon Suk-yeol is the second president to be removed from office in the country. Before him, Park Geun-hye was the first president to be removed from office in 2017.
