Trump will not go to jail or pay any fine over his criminal conviction
The 78-year-old Republican leader's record will bear a verdict of guilt following his sentencing by Justice Juan Merchan. Just prior to the january 20 oath ceremony, a case that had raised doubts about Trump's ability to regain the white house was resolved with the sentencing to unconditional release. Merchan would permanently record Trump's guilt by issuing an unconditional release, which would come with no additional legal consequences like probation, fines, or jail time.
"It's been a witch hunt in politics. The purpose of it was to harm my reputation. Before the punishment, the US president-elect stated, "I would lose the election, and obviously that didn't work."
Trump said he was innocent and had done nothing wrong throughout the six-week trial last year, but he did not testify.
The first-ever criminal prosecution against a US president, past or present, comes to a close with the sentence. Being convicted of a crime, trump will be the first president to hold the position.
