Google to change Gulf of Mexico to 'Gulf of America' in Maps
The Interior Department of the trump administration said on friday that it has formally renamed the Alaskan peak Denali, the highest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley and the gulf of mexico to the gulf of America.
In keeping with a campaign pledge, President donald trump issued the name changes as part of a rush of executive actions shortly after taking office on january 20.
In an announcement this week, the Interior Department said, "As instructed by the President, the gulf of mexico will now officially be known as the gulf of America and North America's highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley."
Earlier this month, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum made the lighthearted suggestion that North America, including the United States, be renamed "Mexican America"—a moniker that was historically featured on an early map of the region.
In other places where naming conflicts exist, google has used the same locale-based labeling practices.
This body of water, which data-borders both south korea and japan, is referred to as the "Sea of japan (East Sea)."
Iran vowed to sue google in 2012 when the company removed the phrase "Persian Gulf" from its maps and failed to give the waterway connecting iran and the Arabian Peninsula a name. Other nations now refer to the body of water as the "Persian gulf (Arabian Gulf)".
