Anurag Kashyap said that he no longer looks forward when questioned about the future of independent filmmaking. He can only speak about the problems that he and other filmmakers currently data-face.
Seeing a film at a theater is a social event. When watching movies on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, one cannot share the experience of laughing, crying, and whistling with a large number of strangers. Many people now prefer viewing films, which has become a more private and solitary activity with the introduction of OTT.
Theaters must raise ticket prices, serve pricey food, and run a lot of advertising to offset their costs in order to meet the dwindling demand. A guy in Bengaluru even filed a lawsuit against PVR-INOX last week for squandering twenty-five minutes on commercials! Film festivals guarantee an uninterrupted movie-watching experience because they don't play advertisements as commercial theaters do. The same cannot be said about commercial films, though, as many marketers fund both the movies and the theaters. This problem doesn't appear to have a solution anytime soon, but maybe one will.
