India's 14th Vice President
jagdeep dhankhar surprised everyone by suddenly resigning from his post on
monday (July 21, 2025). Despite having two years of tenure left, he has cited
health reasons for his resignation. However, the opposition has suspected some other reasons behind his decision.
74-year-old Dhankhar expressed gratitude to President
draupadi murmu and
prime minister Narendra Modi in his resignation and wrote, "It has been an honor for me to contribute to this transformative phase of India's unprecedented progress and economic development. The cooperation and support of
prime minister Narendra Modi has been invaluable. I have learned a lot from him during my tenure."
Jagdeep Dhankhar was born in a farmer family
Dhankhar started his political career with
congress and was an
mp in the PV
narasimha Rao government. Later, during the rise of
ashok gehlot in
rajasthan, he left the
congress and joined the BJP. He was also a Union
minister in the Chandrashekhar government. He was always active on the issue of getting OBC reservation to the OBC community, especially the Jat community of Rajasthan.
Strict attitude as the
governor of Bengal
In 2019, he was appointed the
governor of West Bengal. During his tenure, he made several sharp comments on the
mamata banerjee government regarding law and order,
university appointments and federal structure. Due to this, he remained in constant political discussions.
Confrontation with the opposition as Vice President
In 2022, he was elected Vice President by 528 votes. This was considered the biggest
victory for a Vice President after 1992, but his sharp attitude with the opposition in the
rajya sabha remained in the headlines many times. The opposition had also tried to remove him from the post, to which Dhankhar had quipped, "This is like performing bypass surgery with a rusty vegetable cutting knife."
