Edappadi K. Palaniswami has been actively leading protests against the
Union government over issues related to the
100-day employment guarantee scheme (MGNREGA), accusing it of neglecting the interests of rural workers and state governments.Speaking during the protest, Edappadi Palaniswami alleged that the Union government has failed to release adequate funds for the scheme, resulting in delays in wage payments and a reduction in employment opportunities for thousands of rural families. He said the mahatma gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is a vital lifeline for the poor, particularly during times of economic hardship, and any weakening of the scheme would severely affect livelihoods.The former chief minister stated that tamil Nadu has effectively implemented the scheme and provided employment to lakhs of beneficiaries, but the Union government’s policies and funding constraints have created unnecessary hurdles. He criticized the Centre for ignoring repeated representations made by state governments and opposition parties regarding pending dues.Edappadi Palaniswami said that as the leader of the Opposition, it was his responsibility to raise his voice against policies that harm the common people. He accused the Union government of undermining federal principles by placing financial pressure on states and restricting welfare schemes meant for the poor.During the protest, AIADMK legislators and party cadres participated in large numbers, raising slogans demanding the immediate release of pending funds, an increase in the number of guaranteed workdays, and timely wage payments to workers.Palaniswami urged the Union government to take corrective steps without delay and ensure that the 100-day employment scheme continues to function effectively. He warned that if the demands are not addressed, protests would be intensified in the coming days.Political observers noted that the protest marks Edappadi Palaniswami’s assertive role as leader of the Opposition, positioning himself as a strong voice on issues affecting rural welfare and social security.
