Central Government Must Act to Secure Release of 62 Fishermen from Sri Lankan Prisons: CM M.K. Stalin

Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. Stalin has urged the Union Government to take immediate and decisive action to secure the release of 62 indian fishermen currently imprisoned in Sri Lanka. Highlighting the humanitarian and livelihood concerns involved, the chief minister stressed the need for swift diplomatic intervention.

Humanitarian Concern for Fishermen

In his statement, stalin said that the continued detention of indian fishermen has caused immense hardship to their families, many of whom depend solely on fishing for their livelihood. He pointed out that prolonged imprisonment not only affects the fishermen but also pushes their families into economic distress and emotional suffering.

Appeal for Diplomatic Intervention

The chief minister emphadata-sized that issues related to fishermen crossing maritime boundaries should be handled with compassion and dialogue, not harsh punitive measures. He called upon the central government to engage with Sri Lankan authorities at the diplomatic level to ensure the fishermen’s early release.

Stalin also reiterated that such incidents often occur due to traditional fishing practices and the lack of clear demarcation at sea, making fishermen vulnerable to arrests.

Call for a Permanent Solution

Beyond immediate release, the chief minister urged the Union government to work towards a long-term and permanent solution to prevent repeated arrests. He suggested:

  • Strengthening bilateral agreements with Sri Lanka
  • Enhancing communication and coordination between maritime agencies
  • Exploring livelihood alternatives and support mechanisms for fishermen
State Government’s Efforts

Stalin stated that the tamil Nadu government has consistently taken up fishermen-related issues with the Centre and continues to provide legal assistance and welfare support to affected families.
