Chennai: tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. stalin has alleged that incidents of student suicides in higher educational institutions across india have increased since the bharatiya janata party (BJP) came to power at the Centre. He expressed serious concern over the mental health and well-being of students, calling the trend deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

Speaking in Chennai, the chief minister stated that mounting academic pressure, social discrimination, economic hardships, and an unsupportive institutional environment have contributed to the rise in such tragic incidents. He emphadata-sized that educational spaces should nurture confidence, equality, and critical thinking, not fear or exclusion.

Mr. stalin criticized the Union government for what he described as a lack of adequate measures to address mental health challenges among students. He also pointed to issues such as reduced public investment in education, increased privatization, and the absence of strong grievance redressal mechanisms within educational institutions as factors worsening the situation.

Highlighting the Dravidian Model of governance followed in tamil Nadu, the chief minister said his government has consistently worked to create an inclusive and student-friendly educational ecosystem. He cited initiatives such as expanded scholarship programs, free education schemes, hostels for disadvantaged students, and mental health counseling services as steps taken to support students and prevent distress.

Mr. stalin urged the Union government to take immediate and concrete action to safeguard students, including strengthening counseling infrastructure, ensuring social justice, and fostering an environment of equality in higher education institutions.

Concluding his remarks, the chief minister reaffirmed that protecting students’ lives and dignity must remain a top priority for any government, and called for collective efforts to ensure that educational institutions become safe, supportive, and empowering spaces for young people.
