Twin Tube TBM Tunnel: Strategic Twin Tube Tunnel Under Brahmaputra River


Approval and Significance


The central government has approved the construction of a twin tube tunnel under the Brahmaputra River.


The tunnel will be the first of its kind in india and the second in the world, featuring one tube for road traffic and the other for railway.


Named the Twin Tube TBM Tunnel, it will be 33.7 km long and cost ₹18,662 crore.


Strategically significant due to proximity to neighboring China.


Project Scope and Connectivity


Includes a 4-lane, access-controlled greenfield connectivity project along 715 km from Gohpur to Numaligarh on NH-15 in Assam.


A 15.79 km section will be a combined road-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra River.


Will benefit northeastern states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.


Expected to reduce freight costs, increase capacity, and accelerate socio-economic development.


Impact on Travel and Freight

Current journey from Numaligarh to Gohpur takes approximately six hours; the project will reduce it to just 30 minutes.


Capacity enhancements expected to handle an additional 96 million tons of freight annually.


Key cargoes transported include coal, steel, iron ore, cement, food grains, fertilizers, containers, and petroleum products.


Tourism and Industrial Development


Improved access to major destinations: Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Hampi, Bellary Fort, Tungabhadra Dam, and other religious and historical sites.


Strengthened connectivity will boost trade, industrial development, and regional economic growth.


Estimated direct and indirect employment generation: 8 million person-days.


Additional rail and Road Projects


Multi-tracking approved for Kasara–Manmad, Delhi–Ambala, and Bellary–Hospete sections, costing ₹18,509 crore, benefiting 3,902 villages and 9.7 million people.


Redevelopment of NH-160A in maharashtra approved at ₹3,320.38 crore.


Four-lane expansions in gujarat (Dhamsia–Bitada/Movi, Nasarpur–Malotha) at ₹4,583.64 crore.


Widening of National Highway 5 in telangana from Gudebellur to mahabubnagar at ₹3,175.08 crore.
