Chennai: M. K. stalin has written to narendra Modi, urging the Union government to take immediate steps to grant indian citizenship to Sri Lankan Tamils residing in the state.In his letter, the chief minister emphadata-sized the long-pending demand of thousands of Sri Lankan Tamils who have been living in tamil Nadu for several decades after fleeing ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. He highlighted that many of them were born and brought up in india and have deep social, cultural, and economic ties with the state.Stalin pointed out that despite residing in india for years, a significant number of Sri Lankan Tamils continue to live in refugee camps and data-face limitations in accessing higher education, employment opportunities, property ownership, and other welfare benefits due to the lack of indian citizenship.The chief minister reportedly requested the prime minister to consider humanitarian grounds and provide a permanent solution by granting citizenship, enabling them to lead dignified and secure lives. He also stressed that resolving the issue would help integrate them fully into society and ensure social justice.The letter comes amid renewed discussions on the welfare and rehabilitation of Sri Lankan tamil refugees in tamil Nadu. The state government has consistently maintained that the long-standing issue requires compassionate and comprehensive intervention from the Centre.
