Chennai,— In a major boost to agriculture, the tamil Nadu government has successfully converted 58,000 acres of fallow land into productive cultivable agricultural lands, Agriculture minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam announced today. The initiative is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to increase farmers’ income and strengthen the agricultural sector.

Objective of the Initiative

The primary goal of this programme is to enhance farmers’ income by ensuring that unutilized or fallow lands are brought under cultivation. By converting previously idle lands into productive farmland, the state aims to:

Increase overall agricultural output

Promote food security in the region

Provide opportunities for farmers to diversify their crops

Reduce dependence on imports for certain crops

The government is coordinating with district agriculture offices to identify fallow lands and provide necessary support for cultivation, including seeds, irrigation facilities, and guidance on modern farming techniques.

According to minister Panneerselvam:

“The government is committed to raising farmers’ income by enabling the cultivation of unused lands and supporting them with modern agricultural practices.”

Farmers who participate in the programme will receive:

High-yield crop varieties suitable for local soil and climate

Technical support and training in sustainable and organic farming methods

Financial assistance for irrigation, seeds, and other inputs

This initiative is also closely linked with the “Mannuyir Kaappom” scheme, which promotes soil fertility and eco-friendly agricultural practices. Together, these programmes aim to increase productivity while maintaining soil health and environmental sustainability.
