Comrade Nallakannu’s Body Donated to Chennai Medical College for Medical Education

Senior Communist leader R. Nallakannu, a respected figure in tamil Nadu politics, passed away today at the age of 101 after a prolonged illness. He had been receiving treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in chennai, where his health deteriorated despite intensive medical care.

Illness and Passing

Nallakannu’s health had been declining due to age‑related complications. He was admitted to hospital earlier this month after his condition worsened and required critical care. Despite treatment — including ventilator support — multiple vital organs failed over the last few days, and he breathed his last at approximately 1:55 PM on february 25, 2026.

The hospital released a statement confirming his passing and expressed condolences to his family and well‑wishers.

Body Donation for Medical Training

In line with his long‑held personal wishes, Nallakannu’s family announced that his body will be donated to the madras Medical college (Chennai Medical College) for use in medical education and training. His decision reflects a growing trend in india where individuals pledge their bodies to support medical students’ learning and research after death.

This donation will help anatomy students gain crucial practical experience — an essential part of medical training — and is seen as a final act of service to society from the veteran leader.

Following the announcement of his death, the Communist party and supporters organized tributes at party offices in Chennai. party officials, political leaders, and citizens gathered to pay respects, and his body was taken to the party office for public homage before being transported for the donation process.
